Tutors to Teachers Delaware

Earn Your M.Ed. While Serving Young Readers
Tutors to Teachers is a Reading Assist and Wilmington University partnership that helps Reading Assist Fellows take the next step toward a teaching career.
Through this program, fellows can earn a Master’s degree in Special Education and Delaware state licensure while gaining hands-on experience supporting underserved elementary students in Delaware.
How the Program Works
A Pathway From Tutoring to Teaching
Tutors to Teachers combines a year of service with graduate study and classroom experience. Participants begin as Reading Assist Fellows, providing one-on-one or small-group reading instruction for students who need intensive support. In the second year, participants complete a school district residency while continuing to build real classroom experience.
Teaching residents receive an additional stipend during their residency year. Past participants have had a 100% post-graduate hire rate and can continue their teaching careers in Delaware.
Through the Reading Assist and Wilmington University partnership, your M.Ed. in Special Education can cost as little as $4,000 once credits and education awards are applied.
Role responsibilities include:
- Lead daily one-on-one or small-group reading sessions for up to 10 students
- Participate in a comprehensive four-week, full-time, graduate-level training
- Develop personalized lesson plans based on student needs
- Monitor student progress and adjust instruction as needed
- Meet weekly with a coach for guidance and feedback
- Participate in Reading Assist training, events, and collaborative projects
- Coordinate with school staff and follow school schedules, breaks, and holidays
