Summer Tutor

Reading Assist Summer Tutors provide reading instruction to students entering grades Pre-K-4 who need additional reading support. Tutors focus on teaching foundational reading skills to students to support accelerated learning.

  • Tutors work  in-person at public schools in New Castle, Kent (Dover), and Sussex (Seaford) Counties, and in Chester, Pennsylvania.
  • Training and tutoring takes place between mid-June and early August 2023.
  • Tutors start with paid training prior to delivering 4-5 weeks of in-person instruction.
  • Reading Assist Summer Tutors earn $15-$31/hour, depending on experience.

Responsibilities:

  • Plan and deliver one-on-one or two-on-one reading lessons for up to 10 students daily (30-minute sessions)
  • Track attendance and performance data
  • Deliver 4-5 weeks of tutoring, Monday-Thursday, in schools, part-time hours (16-25 hours/week depending on site placement)
  • Deliver lessons in person
  • Develop a positive relationship with children in grades 1-4 who may struggle academically

Expectations:

  • Ability to blend, segment, and manipulate sounds within words
  • Interest in literacy, education, and community service
  • Experience with tutoring, teaching, or working with children (preferred)
  • A passion for education equity
  • A patient and flexible mindset
  • Openness to constructive feedback
  • Must be reliable/committed
  • Submit to background checks and fingerprints
  • Must be authorized to work in the U.S.
  • High school diploma (some college preferred)
  • Proficiency in Spanish a plus
