Tutors to Teachers Delaware offers reading tutors a path to advanced education and licensure for as little as $4,000.
WILMINGTON, DE (March 25, 2024) – In partnership with Wilmington University, Reading Assist is excited to announce the launch of Tutors to Teachers Delaware—a new initiative that allows individuals to obtain a master’s degree while completing two years of AmeriCorps service as reading tutors for underserved elementary students.
“I’m thrilled to introduce the Tutors to Teachers Delaware partnership with Wilmington University to engage a brand new cohort of Reading Assist Fellows and future teachers,” said Reading Assist CEO Caroline O’Neal. “Student data—how much our students improve and learn to love reading—is the ultimate measure of our success at Reading Assist. But the fellow experience is extremely important. More than 80% of our Reading Assist Fellows tell us at the end of their AmeriCorps service year that they are interested in pursuing a career in education. Through this partnership, we can now offer fellows an attractive pathway to teaching while also infusing a pipeline of new educators with advanced training in the science of reading into Delaware schools.”
Through the Tutors to Teachers Delaware program, Reading Assist Fellows have the opportunity to complete their M.Ed. in Special Education and state teacher licensure in just two years while simultaneously gaining hands-on classroom experience as reading tutors and teaching residents. In exchange for spending their second year in WilmU’s nationally recognized Yearlong Residency option, which provides a full year of teacher preparation beyond standard student teaching models, it is possible for candidates to earn up to $50,000 in annual stipend funds. They can also receive reduced tuition through their AmeriCorps service and earn up to 12 credits toward this master’s degree.
Wilmington University President Dr. LaVerne Harmon expressed the significance of the partnership with Reading Assist. “We’re privileged to be the choice for many educators in Delaware seeking teaching credentials,” she said. “Joining forces with Reading Assist allows us to welcome its dedicated fellows into our university family. These individuals have focused on teaching diverse children, including those facing significant reading challenges and coming from low-income or multilingual backgrounds. We’re honored to welcome these future teachers who will inspire deserving children to succeed.”
Reading Assist is now accepting applications for the first Tutors to Teachers Delaware cohort beginning in August of 2024. Individuals with a bachelor’s degree in any field, or those who previously completed a fellowship with the organization are encouraged to apply through the Reading Assist website www.readingassist.org/tutorstoteachers.
